SigmaQuest’s SigmaSure Helps Companies Ensure Product Quality Throughout RoHS Transition
SANTA CLARA, Calif., August 17, 2006—SigmaQuest ™ Inc., the leading provider of software for managing product quality throughout manufacturing and a product’s lifecycle, today announced that its software helps OEMs track the quality and performance of  products that have been revamped to adhere to the RoHS (RESTRICTION of  the use OF certain HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES) Directive.  This European Union market Directive limits and even bans the use of certain chemistries and metals on new electrical and electronic equipment.  This pertains to revised levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
“Adhering to the RoHS Directive has been a huge obstacle for many electronics companies, as removing the newly banned substances can impact the performance and reliability of products from cell phones to automotive components,” said Nader Fathi, CEO of SigmaQuest. “It is well understood that replacing a substance such as lead from the soldering joints on a printed circuit board with another substance can cause all kinds of product performance issues, including the higher melting requirements of the newly revamped soldering points.  SigmaQuest’s SigmaSure suite helps OEMs find, fix, detect and avoid issues resulting from the transition from non-RoHS to RoHS compliance.”

Fathi continued, “Most electronic products were to be RoHS compliant as of July 1, 2006.  Those companies that made the switch can now use SigmaQuest solutions to see how transitioning to RoHS compliance has impacted their returns.  Companies that are still in the process of completing their compliance can use SigmaSure to track the quality of their suppliers’ components along with their own internal processes.”

SigmaQuest’s SigmaSure on-demand, web-based software features several modules where the impact of moving to RoHS compliance can be checked.  Through its Manufacturing and Test Insight software, users can continuously monitor their manufacturing chain’s product quality data anytime and anywhere, and OEMs can measure the impact of how new, RoHS-compliant components affect their end products.  Through the Supplier Quality Insight module, OEMs can track the quality of their core suppliers’ components, including those modified for RoHS compliance, before committing to the assembly of broader product offerings.  Further, SigmaQuest’s RMA Insight module delivers instant knowledge about defects, trends and the root cause of failures on products returned by end customers.  Through this comprehensive software suite, OEMs can more quickly learn when products aren’t conforming to desired specifications along with the cause of product quality issues.  From there, they can make the changes necessary to enhance yields and maintain brand loyalty and customer satisfaction.

“SigmaQuest developed its entire suite of software so that our customers can quickly pinpoint the root cause of performance issues at any time throughout a product’s lifecycle.  We accomplish this through personalized views of product quality information, pro-active alerts and comprehensive traceability, which are provided in real time,” said Owen Tucker, vice president of marketing at SigmaQuest.  “Ideally, we like users to implement our software early on in the product development and manufacturing process, as this way, they can identify and fix any potential problems before their products have left the production floor.  In  turn, this enhances end customer satisfaction and lowers costs.”

SigmaQuest’s SigmaSure software has been adopted by a plethora of companies that need to comply with these new RoHS standards.  Beyond helping OEMs better manage product performance and quality, the software also helps to provide “due diligence” information by creating technical files that are loaded with compelling, supporting documentation that confirms “RoHS compliance.”  This information is built into the manufacturing process and is systematically “quality controlled.”  SigmaQuest tools can also provide auditable data about what a company has done to make sure non-compliance is identified in the manufacturing process.
